Near The Great pyramids, The Grand Egyptian Museum is situated on the side of the first desert plateau. It’s characterized by a 50-meter elevation difference produced as the Nile carves its way through the desert to the Mediterranean, a geological feature that’s formed Egypt for over 3,000 years.
The Great pyramids, which are funerary sites, are found 2 kilometers from the museum site in the desert on the plateau, while the museum is located both in the valley and on the plateau.
The museum’s architecture takes advantage of the level differential to build a new ‘edge’ to the plateau, characterized by a curtain of transparent stone that varies from day to night. The museum is situated between the Nile Valley’s level and the mountains, never exceeding the plateau.
From the general size of the complex to the smallest of specifics, a 3-dimensional structure inscribed by a series of visual axes from the site to the three pyramids determines the context within which the museum emerges.
The visitor enters the museum through a monumental forecourt, a shaded entry room, and a grand staircase that ascends to plateau level, where the galleries are situated, and the visitor sees the pyramids for the first time from inside the museum.
The museum will be a cultural facility dedicated to Egyptology, with 24,000m2 of permanent display space, equal to almost four football fields, a children’s museum, convention and education services, a large conservation center, and vast gardens on the 50-hectare property.
The Tutankhamen collection, which is now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and the Solar Sail, which is now housed alongside the pyramids, are among the museum’s exhibits.
“The Grand Egyptian Museum is a gift from Egypt to the whole world,” said minister of antiquities, Khaled el-Enany, echoing a slogan used to promote the opening of a second Suez Canal channel in 2015, amid claims the mega-project would revitalise Egypt’s economy. Four ISO Certificates in 180 Days
Continuing to build on its successes, the Grand Egyptian Museum has obtained its fourth ISO certificate in the last 180 days. GEM was awarded ISO/PAS 45005:2020, Occupational Health and Safety Management specifically with the general guidelines for safe working during the COVID-19 pandemic, on March 8, 2021 by initiating and adhering to the highest quality standards in the face of the Corona virus, from the beginning of the crisis until now.
Since September 2020, GEM has received three other ISO Certifications: Management Systems of Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001: 2018), Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) and Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001).
On February 28, 2021, Major General Atef Moftah, General Supervisor of the Grand Egyptian Museum Project and the Surrounding Area, addressed the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) outlining how project matched international standards of quality in dealing with Corona virus.
The Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) headed by Engineer Hani El-Desouky, Executive Director of the Council, sent a letter to the General Supervisor stating that the Council had confirmed that the museum conformed to international standards (ISO / PAS45005: 2020). The letter indicated that the booklet issued by the museum entitled ‘We have never stopped … in the face of Corona’ followed and upheld international specifications, in terms of communication and documentation of the virus, in terms of processes to follow and in terms of implementation of necessary precautionary measures to deal with the Corona virus. The booklet also provided a framework that could be used in other such crises.
