Citadel of Salah-Eldeen

When in Cairo, it is basically impossible to miss the Salah El-Din Citadel, one of the world’s greatest monuments to medieval warfare. Resembling a typical early medieval fortress, with large imposing gateways, towers and high defending walls, the Citadel is one of Cairo’s main attractions and probably the most popular non-pharaonic monument in the Egyptian capital. The prominent fortress houses three mosques – of which the impressive Mohamed Ali Mosque – a carriage museum, a military museum, and a garden museum, just to name a few, and they are all worth a visit. You are even allowed the run of the fortifications and it is worth a try: the views are spectacular from this height. The citadel is also home to the impressive Gawhara Palace (the Jewel Palace), named after Gawhara Hanem, Mohamed Ali’s last wife. Built-in 1814, it housed the ruler’s administration and was used as a personal residence by the Egyptian leader. Beautiful gold inscriptions adorn the walls of this majestic Ottoman-influenced palace. One of its most eccentric components is the Watch Hall, where the shape of a watch has been used to decorate the walls.

It is worth mentioning that there are two ways to climb the Mount Sinai, one of which is the camel path traced by the Egyptian viceroy Abbas Hilmi Pasha. It is preferable to follow this trail for the climb and to use the stairs route that was built by the monastery monks for the descent. 7. Bibliotheca of Alexandria

Alexandria
Bibliotheca of Alexandria

The most prominent library in classical antiquity is the Bibliotheca of Alexandria or the ancient library. It was part of an Alexandria, Egypt, research institute. The collection of the Library of Alexandria is therefore universal, containing, for the most part, the writings up to that period, particularly the ancient texts of Egypt and Greece.

Before building the ancient Library of Alexandria, the world had never had a larger library. Located in the town that gives it its name, facing the Mediterranean Sea, it was built at the beginning of the third century B.C by one of the kings of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Ptolemy I, and expanded by his son, Ptolemy II, and housed more than 900,000 manuscripts in his reign of greatest glory, In later times, the importance of the Alexandria Library decreased and much of the observations were lost due to changes in the authorities and frequent invasions.

The original library had all the secrets of the article about the ancient civilisation of Egypt, but all the manuscripts were destroyed, and we had to wait several centuries before the scientist Champollion came in the 18th century with Napoleon in the French campaign and deciphered the Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Its destruction has been attributed to various actors, but no version has been proved, the only sure thing is that it eventually vanished and the legendary collective fictional library of humanity started not until 1987, an international effort that aimed to rescue the cultural significance of the site and the image it represents. UNESCO coordinated the project and finally, with the name of the Alexandrina Library, it was officially opened in 1996.
