Location of the Grand Egyptian Museum

What to Expect When You Visit

Visitors to the new Giza Museum will first travel through a sizable plaza filled with date plants before entering a sizable atrium where they will be met by a number of enormous statues that were collected from various locations across the nation. How the Giza Museum Came to Be

After deciding that a new museum should be constructed, the authorities decided to announce an architectural competition for the design of what would eventually become the nation’s flagship museum on January 7, 2002. This contest attracted 1,557 entries from 82 different nations, demonstrating its enormous success.

Only 20 entries remained for the competition’s second round, at which point the participants were asked to provide more information and specifics. The winning reward of USD 250,000 was given to the Dublin-based company Heneghan Peng on June 2, 2003. According to the chosen design, the structure will resemble a chamfered triangle in general.

Even though the Grand Egyptian Museum’s foundation stone was placed in 2002 and a final design was approved not long after, actual work didn’t start until March 12th, 2012. Egypt’s ministry of antiquities declared in May 2015 that a portion of the site would open in May 2018.

Does Egypt Really Need a New Museum?

Is such a huge new museum actually necessary? The director of Cairo’s already well-known Egyptian Museum asserts that the response is a resounding YES.

The historic Egyptian museum in Cairo has done a fantastic job for the past 100 years, but with new locations and new objects being unearthed and retrieved on a regular basis, the museum has quite literally hit capacity.

More than 100,000 other ancient relics are still kept in storage in the museum’s basement, where there are only about 160,000 things on show. It is feared that these treasures are slowly decaying owing to humidity and other factors.
